This is a classic utility jacket, commonly known as the “P-44,” used by the U.S. Marine Corps on the Pacific Front during the latter stages of World War II. I estimate the size to be around 38–40.
Developed as the Marine Corps’ exclusive combat uniform, the P-44 was an evolution of the earlier P-41 jacket; it is a practical, combat-ready garment featuring a large chest pocket and a functional layout.Known for its design, which had a significant influence on the combat uniforms of various nations after the war, it holds a very important place in the history of military wear. The pants that come with this jacket are famously known as “monkey pants.”
The fabric is HBT (herringbone twill), a classic choice for the Marine Corps. The soft, well-worn texture resulting from years of use is full of a charm that can never be replicated by a brand-new item.
The USMC stencil remains clearly visible on the chest, and the handwritten inventory numbers and markings found on the collar lining and various parts of the jacket, as well as the rank insignia painted on the sleeves, were all actually applied by soldiers at the time. These traces demonstrate that this is not merely a piece of clothing, but a historical artifact that was actually worn by a Marine.Since the Marine Corps does not officially require rank insignia, and both enlisted personnel and officers wore the same uniform in the field, such locally made modifications are commonly found.
During World War II, the Marines fought on grueling battlefields such as Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. This item appears to be one that survived that era, with traces of practical use evident throughout. It is a piece that allows you to feel the unique presence of an authentic item that has weathered the war—a quality not found in modern deadstock. The P-44, in particular, is known to have been used on Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and other battlefields.
As the P-44 itself becomes increasingly difficult to obtain with each passing year, pieces bearing actual wear marks and markings are highly prized by collectors. It is a masterpiece that cannot be overlooked when discussing Marine Corps equipment.
