The tag reads “JACKET, FLYING, MAN’S INTERMEDIATE, TYPE MA-1,” and features the MIL-J-8279 series designation along with the manufacturer’s name, ALBERT TURNER & CO., INC.This is a particularly appealing example among 1950s MA-1s, and it allows you to fully appreciate the details unique to the early models.

The MA-1 evolved from the earlier B-15 series and debuted in the 1950s as an intermediate-zone flight jacket that symbolized the U.S. Air Force’s jet age.Unlike later MA-1s, pieces from this era still feature the early specification with a sage green shell and lining. While the MA-1 has now become a fashion staple, an authentic 1950s piece—close to its origins—has a presence all its own.

Furthermore, this jacket is equipped with a brass CONMAR zipper. The main zipper still retains its leather pull tab, which, combined with the weathered look of the brass, creates a wonderful atmosphere.The condition is “Used.” As expected of a jacket that has actually been worn, the shell shows stains, fading, and localized reddish discoloration. This unique fading is precisely the charm of original nylon that has stood the test of time.

The neck and sleeve ribbing show wear and have holes; the cuffs, in particular, show significant signs of use. The waist ribbing is in relatively good condition. The cotton tape on the main zipper has some tears but has been repaired, and the zipper currently opens and closes properly. Otherwise, there are minor scratches, stains, and other signs of wear appropriate for its age.

It is by no means in mint condition. However, there is great appeal in the fact that this piece—dating back to 1958, an era when the MA-1 was still in its purest form as a military flight jacket—survives today while clearly retaining the traces of its past wear. It features the sage green typical of early MA-1s, is made by Albert Turner, has a brass CONMAR zipper, and displays authentic aging.

This is a vintage flight jacket with tremendous character.
