This is a 1st Model Jungle Fatigue Jacket from the 1963 contract, adopted during the early stages of the Vietnam War. The size is LARGE-LONG, which is a larger size.

Even among Jungle Fatigues, which remain highly popular today, the 1st Model—the very first version—is a rare model with an extremely short production run and few surviving examples. It features details unique to the early model, such as epaulets, a gas flap, and cuff adjustment tabs, allowing you to experience a classic look distinct from later models.

The Jungle Fatigue Jacket is a tropical combat uniform developed specifically for use on the hot and humid battlefields of Vietnam. It was significantly lighter than the conventional M-1951 field jacket and made from quick-drying cotton poplin. Characterized by a functional design reflecting combat experience—such as large cargo pockets and drainage holes—it became the foundation for subsequent U.S. military field wear.

This item is a 1963 contract piece bearing the marking “DSA-1-2397-63-C” and comes in the rare size LARGE-LONG. This size is appealing not only to larger individuals but also to those who prefer an oversized fit.

However, the jacket’s greatest appeal lies in the signs of having been worn and used extensively over many years.Significant repairs have been made to the back shoulders, sleeves, and various other areas, and the fabric used for these repairs is the same jungle fatigues fabric as the original. While the stitching itself appears to be a recent repair, the jacket has been carefully reinforced using the original fabric from that era, giving it a unique presence—not merely as a damaged item, but as a piece that was “restored to continue being used.”

The atmosphere created by this practical item—which was put through its paces on the battlefield and worn while its torn areas were repeatedly patched—is something you simply cannot experience with a brand-new or deadstock piece. This is a piece that truly embodies the unique charm of vintage military gear.

It is highly recommended not only as a collector’s item but also as a vintage piece to be worn while appreciating the character of its repairs.

Condition

There are significant signs of wear throughout, with large patches on the back, shoulders, sleeves, and other areas. Although the patches are made from jungle fatigue fabric of the same type, we believe the stitching was done in recent years. The tag is still present, but the overall condition cannot be described as good. However, it is precisely this battle-worn look that is this item’s greatest charm, and it is a vintage piece that you can appreciate, repairs and all.
