ERDL Ripstop Camouflage Jacket, contracted in 1969, US AIR FORCE specs.
This is an extremely rare custom piece that is estimated to have been worn by a Major class officer of the U.S. Air Force at the time. Size is SMALL-SHORT.
Among the ERDL camouflage adopted at the end of the Vietnam War, this item is made of ripstop fabric that is both durable and lightweight. While this is a material designed for actual warfare in a hot and humid battlefield environment, this item shows very little wear and the condition of the fabric is in excellent condition.
The most distinctive feature is the clear modification made by Taylor at that time.
The sleeves have been changed to short sleeves for practicality.
The underarms have been shaped and adjusted to give a more flattering body line when worn.
These are customizations unique to the officer class that cannot be seen in mass-produced products, and are thought to be the result of pursuing a balance between comfort and appearance under actual combat conditions.
The US Air Force tape and name tape on the chest, and the Oak Leaf (Major) insignia on the collar, which indicates the rank of Major, are all details that strongly indicate the rank and affiliation at the time. The value of this jacket is further enhanced by the fact that these are realistic specifications based on the assumption of actual operations, rather than later replacements.
This is not just an ERDL jacket, but a piece that allows the viewer to imagine "who wore it, in what capacity, and how it was worn. The condition, age, and modifications all add up to make this a collection-level piece.
