Signed in 1971, this is the U.S. Air Force N-3B flight jacket designed for extremely cold climates.
Alongside the MA-1 and N-2B, it is one of the most iconic U.S. Air Force flight jackets, and among them, it is a jacket designed for heavy-duty use that prioritizes exceptional cold-weather protection.
The tag reads “JACKET, FLYING, MAN’S TYPE N-3B MIL-J-6279H.”The contract number is “DSA 100-71-C-0062”; the manufacturer is SKYLINE CLOTHING CORPORATION; and the size is LARGE, offering a perfect balance of rarity and practicality.
The roots of the N-3B lie in flight wear for extremely cold climates, developed after World War II as the U.S. Air Force transitioned to the jet age. Evolving from the N-3 series, it was widely adopted from the 1950s onward as cold-weather gear for aviation personnel operating in cold regions, particularly Alaska. The N-3B’s most distinctive features are its unique construction designed for harsh, sub-zero environments—including a long cut (in stark contrast to the waist-length MA-1), a large hood, and thick interlining.
This item is a vintage piece from the 1971 contract. It features a sage green shell, a large hood with a striking fur trim, and dark-colored shearling lining on the inside. The tag clearly states “INTERLINING 100% WOOL,” and its substantial construction—distinctive of military gear—sets it apart from N-3Bs produced as modern fashion items.
The front features a double-closing system that combines a zipper with large buttons. It is equipped with large hip pockets and a utility pocket on the left sleeve, a hallmark of flight jackets. The main zipper bears the “SCOVILL” label, while the sleeve pockets feature “SCOVILL GRIPPER” zippers—these original period parts are a must-see for vintage enthusiasts.
Above all, what makes this jacket truly captivating is the unique presence of a piece that has actually endured for nearly half a century. The subdued color and soft texture of the nylon shell—qualities that a brand-new jacket could never replicate—combine with the presence of the fur and faux fur lining to create the powerful presence characteristic of early 1970s USAF flight wear.
