A 1990 contract, authentic U.S. military 6-COLOR DESERT CAMOUFLAGE COAT. This is a late-model version of the 6-color desert camouflage pattern, commonly known as “Chocolate Chip.” It is a rare U.S. Navy specimen.

"Chocolate Chip" is one of the camouflage patterns that symbolizes the U.S. military during the Gulf War era. With a base of tan, beige, and brown, its unique design features a pattern of fine black and white specks reminiscent of "stones" scattered throughout, giving it an overwhelming presence among the many U.S. military camouflage patterns.

This item is confirmed to be from the 1990 fiscal year contract based on the inner label.The label reads “COAT, DESERT CAMOUFLAGE PATTERN; COMBAT”; the contract number is DLA100-90-D-0584; and the contractor is AMERICAN APPAREL, INC. The fabric is 50% COTTON / 50% NYLON.

Another noteworthy feature is the “US NAVY” stencil remaining on the chest pocket. Although the print has faded from wear and washing, this worn-out look adds a great deal of character. It’s not just any old “chocolate chip” jacket—this detail, which suggests it was actually used by the Navy, is a major part of its appeal.

The front features four large pockets. While it retains the basic style seen in early ’80s models, the fact that it was produced under a 1990 contract—just before and during the Gulf War—makes it a particularly interesting piece for any collection.
