The CWU series is a new generation of flight jackets adopted in the 1970s as an evolution of the nylon flight jackets—such as the MA-1 and L-2B—that had been in use for many years prior.Its most distinctive feature is the use of flame-retardant materials to protect against aircraft fires, and it remains in service today as the standard flight jacket for the U.S. Air Force and Naval Aviation. In other words, the CWU series was ultimately adopted as the joint flight jacket for both the Air Force and the Navy.
Although the CWU-36/P is labeled a “summer jacket,” it is essentially a lightweight outer layer designed primarily for spring and fall. According to military classification, it is intended for the “light zone,” meaning it is generally designed to be worn in environments ranging from approximately 10 to 20°C.Since it has no padding, it is lightweight and allows for easy movement, making it a model that lets you enjoy the classic flight jacket silhouette for a long period throughout the year.
Its most distinctive feature is the shell fabric, made from 100% aramid fiber. Aramid fiber is known for its excellent heat resistance, flame retardancy, and abrasion resistance, and is a special fiber that resists melting even when exposed to flames.This material, best known as Nomex, was developed to improve pilot survival rates and represents a dramatic evolution from traditional nylon flight jackets.
