When discussing U.S. military HBT from the World War II era, one cannot overlook the “TROUSERS, HERRINGBONE TWILL, SPECIAL.”

These HBT trousers were adopted in the early 1940s as part of the “SPECIAL” specification, designed to provide protection against chemical weapons. They feature details that clearly distinguish them from standard HBT pants, making them a standout piece among U.S. military uniforms from World War II.

Their most distinctive feature is the unique double-layered construction visible from the front to the waist area, along with the numerous buttons. This special design was intended to prevent the ingress of gas; when the front is opened, a row of buttons is visible on the inner layer as well. This pair features plastic buttons rather than metal ones. The complexity of this construction is what gives the “SPECIAL” model its unique charm. However, the gas flap has been cut off and is no longer present.

The fabric is cotton herringbone twill (HBT), emblematic of vintage U.S. military gear. Years of wear and washing have caused the olive color to fade significantly, clearly revealing the fine herringbone weave pattern. This is a truly wonderful pair, featuring the dry, muted color and unique texture of the fabric that can only be appreciated in HBT from this era.

Large cargo pockets are featured on both thighs. Combined with the wide silhouette, they fully convey the rugged character typical of 1940s U.S. military field trousers. The design incorporates details born out of practical necessity as military gear—a far cry from modern cargo pants.

The condition is that of a well-worn, used item. There is significant fading throughout, and you can see scratches, small holes, fabric wear, and frayed stitching. The buttons also show variations in color and design, reflecting their long history of use. The label bearing contract information is missing; only the size label remains.

These are by no means in pristine condition. However, this pair allows you to fully appreciate the overwhelming atmosphere of authentic WWII-era HBT, including the fading and damage that have developed over more than 80 years. It is a highly appealing piece, not only for its historical significance but also as a piece of vintage clothing.
