We’ve received an L-2A flight jacket, a symbol of the early days of the U.S. Air Force. The size is 38.

The L-2 series was developed for flights in the “light zone” (mild climate zones), primarily at low altitudes during spring and fall. Unlike the MA-1 and N-2 series, which feature thick padding, the L-2 series is characterized by a design that prioritizes a lightweight, comfortable fit and excellent mobility, and was favored by many airmen, including fighter pilots.

And the greatest appeal of this L-2A is, without a doubt, its Air Force Blue.

Adopted as the Air Force’s exclusive symbolic color shortly after the U.S. Air Force became an independent branch in 1947, this beautiful blue was produced for only a very short period. It was later changed to the now-familiar sage green for better visibility in combat, making this vivid blue a special color that existed only during the Air Force’s formative years.

While many jackets that have been worn for many years have faded to a purplish “eggplant navy,” this particular piece retains its Air Force Blue hue beautifully, making it exceptionally attractive. It’s a jacket that’s well worth owning just to enjoy this unique shade of blue.

This jacket is size 38. While the size may appear small on paper, it offers a comfortable fit that Japanese wearers around size M can fully enjoy. Although there was originally a tag inside the pocket, it has either been cut out or lost through use.

The front zipper has been replaced with an American-made TALON zipper, likely swapped out during its service life. On the other hand, the original CONMAR zipper on the sleeve’s cigarette pocket remains intact, evoking a sense of its long history as a practical, well-used garment. Being a brass zipper, it is very durable.

The ribbing around the neck has been replaced, but this was also a repair made to allow the jacket to continue serving in actual missions. The tag shows signs of wear, and the jacket as a whole exhibits dirt, signs of use, and repair marks in various places. However, these do not diminish its value in the slightest; rather, they serve as proof that this jacket has truly served alongside Air Force soldiers on missions, giving it a unique presence all its own.The use of thick ribbing is another of the L2-A’s charms.

It possesses a power and history that only an authentic piece can offer—something you’ll never experience with a jacket that looks brand-new. Above all, it is a rare piece that still allows you to appreciate the beauty of “Air Force Blue,” a color symbolic of the U.S. Air Force’s early days.

The L-2 series is gradually disappearing from the market, and Air Force Blue pieces in particular are becoming increasingly difficult to find. It is a highly recommended piece not only for collectors but also for anyone who wants to fully appreciate the charm of vintage flight jackets.
